The 2011 Robert Craig Howell Mountain Napa Valley Zinfandel has aromas open with delicate white pepper, boysenberry, dusty brambleberry and warm stone, fleshing out with cassis, zesty raspberry and just a hint of blueberry. Flavors open up generously on the palate, with nice acidity and a firm tannin backbone. With good structure and nervy appeal, flavors of nutmeg and cardamom emerge on the front palate. The nicely weighted mid-palate is filled with dark mountain fruit and the signature Howell Mountain pepper. On the finish, the fruit settles in and broadens, framed by dusty, creamy oak and touches of warm spice. Smooth and stylistically rich, this food-friendly Zinfandel offers a perfect integration of oak and fine-grained tannins. 94 points.
