Excerpt from the introduction: "On May 17, 1845, The Polynesian carried what was apparently Hawaii's first newspaper advertisement for photographic services. The modest notice was sandwiched in between an announcement about an auction of 'THE good Sch. CHINCHILLA, 70 tons burthen, copper and copper fastened' and an advertisement for ISRAEL H. WRIGHT, PAINTER, GILDER, AND GLAZIER, WIll execute with neatness and despatch, HOUSE, SIGN, SHIP, COACH & ORNAMENTAL PAINTING.' In the photographic, advertisement, one Mr. Theophilus Metcalf 'begs leave to inform the public generally, that he is now prepared to take LIKENESSES by the Daguerreotype, at his Rooms, over the Polynesian Office, every fair day, between the hours of 9 and 1.' The Metcalf announcement continues: 'The dress of the sitters should correspond as far as practicable with the complexion. His terms are $10 a picture, an $2 for a miniature case. Honolulu, May 17th, 1845.'"
