Item Description
As described by 5th graders, Caroline Baker and Viktoria Solfronk:
"This painting portrays a young woman with fiery auburn hair and a dazzling green dress whose head is lost in a book. This angelic painting is done with charcoal, pastel, and oil. Emil Holzhauer was a Modern Expressionist who was born in Germany and immigrated to the U.S. in the early 20th Century. Please bid on this remarkable painting."
About Emil Holzhauer:
Born in: Germany. Immigrated to U.S. in early 20th century.
Dates: 1887-1986
Education: Studied art at the Staatliche Werkkunst Schule in Germany. Studied at the New York School of Art with Robert Henri and later at the Henri Art School. Fellow students included George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent.
Teaching Experience: Chicago Art Institute 1921-1942; Wesleyan College, Macon, Georgia 1942-1953
Medium: Charcoal and pastel, also oil
Style: American Modernist/Expressionist paintings with strong fauvist colors and forms reminiscent of Cezanne and Van Gogh. Holzhauer painted his environment—New York, Monhegan Island, Maine; Asheville, NC; Macon, Georgia; Niceville, FL, Mexico—and his subjects focused on the mundane and finding the beauty and grace in a single moment. Drawings and portraits, architecture and the landscape, Holzhauer’s prolific paintings reflect a man obsessed with recording his environment, not just visually but also capturing the heart and essence of an experience. He was a foreign born artist with an uncanny ability to capture the everyday American reality.
Museums and Galleries: Charleston Renaissance Gallery, Morris Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, High Museum, among many others.
Publications: My South: The Art of Emil Holzhauer (produced by The Charleston Renaissance Gallery in 2007), Emil Holzhauer: The Portrait of an Artist by Audrey Edwards (CeShore Publishing Co., 2001)
