Sanjay – Original Oil on Canvas
Size: Canvas - 9” x 12”, Framed - 16” x 24”
Artist Statement: “This painting is inspired by Wildlife SOS resident Sanjay, taking ‘A Breath of Freedom.’ The name Sanjay means victorious. He was formerly known as the 'Elephant with no Name.' This majestic 50-year old elephant was rescued in February 2017 from a life of captivity and abuse. Today, Sanjay is thriving in the company of his fellow pachyderms at the WSOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre. His determination to overcome a difficult past fills my heart with respect and love for this noble giant.
“I must also admit that I have a crush on Sanjay, his good looks never fail to charm me. He will always be one of my favorites to bring alive on a canvas! You can see him here enjoying a ‘Grass shower’ under the morning sunshine. Be sure to look for the greenery on his head! I am personally very pleased with how this painting turned out.”
About the Artist: A little bit about me – I am an artist, painting as a hobby. I use oil as a medium and enjoy painting wildlife subjects. I am an ardent supporter of Wildlife SOS and love to paint their magnificent rescued residents.
More about Sanjay: Sanjay spent more than fifty years in abusive captivity being exploited in ceremonies, weddings, and processions. Besides suffering from partial blindness, his feet were in a pathetic state, and we received word that Sanjay’s owners had cut chunks of his tusks and sold them on the black market.
The cruel treatment was evident by how meek and withdrawn he was around people. Since his rescue, Sanjay has grown more confident. We now see his boisterous, colorful personality. Sanjay believes in a zero-waste policy and eats every last bit of food given to him (being the biggest elephant at the centre, he gets the largest quantity of food to eat).
Sanjay loves his expansive space at Wildlife SOS, particularly a gigantic pond. He also really enjoys testing his strength by uprooting trees!
