By 1870 tge bustle had replaced the hoop skirt: and small hats - tilted slightly forward -were being worn instead of "poke"bonnets. Men's fashions tended to be less formal than they had been in the earlier years of the 19th century, while women's apparel acquired even mor elegant tones.
