Item Description
Unique student self portrait in the style of Gustav Klimt burnished on wood. Multi-Media on Wood Plaque: 11x14".
Student: Luke Leininger
Animal: Wolf
====
After studying many paintings by Austrian painter, Gustav Klimt, the students began their own self-portrait. They learned about face maps and practiced drawing eyes, noses, and mouths. After choosing their favorite animal, the parent art mentor brought several photos of their animal and many pictures of historical costumes from around the world. These would enhance the fantasy Art Nouveau style that Klimt loved. Next came practice in drawing their animal, and now they were ready to sketch 3 or more ideas for their composition, thinking about their face or figure, their costume, their animal, and the background.
They began by placing an oval face shape on their paper and lightly sketched in the face map. While looking at their class photo, they began to draw their own face. The animal was sketched in and color was added to both figures with prisma pencils. The background was then painted with acrylics. Next came adding the "Klimt", those fantastical rows of embellishments that enrich the clothes, the sky, the sun, the trees, and push the painting into fantasy. Embellishments were added with acrylic paint pens, and voila... we had Klimts.
A lazer jet copy was then burnished onto sanded pine, creating a wood print of their painting. I hope you enjoy each child's unique outlook, creativity and effort. I am so proud of each student.
I would especially like to thank Madison Richter's dad and her grandpa John who sanded the wood for each piece. Special thanks also to Gini Gyorkos, another retired art teacher and friend, who came in on the last day to help with burnishing. It takes a village!
