Item Special Note
Sarah has been screenprinting for over 15 years. She was trained in Scotland at The Edinburgh College of Art while receiving her Masters in Fine Arts. She continued to hone her skills as a screenprinter for 3 years during her post graduate experience working out of Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop.
In 2009 she introduced water-based screenprinting as a course to UCSC’s Printmaking Department where she helped design and oversee the studio operations for this new print media. She continues to teach Silkscreen at UCSC during Summer Session while working out of her studio in Bonny Doon.
Trained as a printmaker, SARAH SANFORD (www.sarahsanfordart. com; Instagram: ssanfordart) is an artist living and working in Santa Cruz, California. In her practice, Sanford plays with reflective materials to bend light and capture its' physical nature in all its' ethereal forms. There is an element of chance in waiting to see what the light will reveal that adds a heightened sense of excitement and anticipation to her creative process. These images become the basis for her large-scale printstallations, multi-layered screenprints and intricate drawings.
Sanford exhibits her work both nationally and internationally including sites such as the Rubicon Gallery, Dublin, Ireland; Euroart Gallery, London; Edinburgh Printmakers, Scotland; San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, CA; Academy of Art University Gallery, San Francisco; and L A Print Space, West Hollywood, CA. She has been featured in a range of publications that include the international print magazine, E-squared: Art + Science; New Linear Perspectives: Scotland’s literary arts and culture journal; and The California Printmaker. In 2017 she was a nominee for the Rydell Visual Arts Fellowship.
Sanford is a lecturer in the Printmaking department at the University of California Santa Cruz. Her past professional memberships include exhibiting with Edinburgh Printmakers, California Society of Printmakers and the Los Angeles Printmakers. She holds an MFA in Printmaking from the Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland and a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from the joint program of CWRU & The Cleveland Institute of Art. Her professional practice includes collaborations and studio tours. In addition she presents lectures and workshops at various institutions that include SCAD Lacoste, France; Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop, Scotland; Indiana University, Bloomington; and the Academy of Art, San Francisco. She works out of her studio amongst the Redwoods of Bonny Doon, CA nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
