Item Description
MS Assistant Principal Jeff Kalil will introduce you to the discipline of bowhunting. The bow is one of mankind's oldest inventions. Mastery of it takes mental focus more than physical prowess, and hunting with it represents a unique challenge. Human beings have eliminated the whitetail deer's natural predators over most of its range. As a result, in much of the United States, the deer population greatly exceeds the land's carrying capacity. Automobile accidents, disease, overgrazing, and winter starvation are consequences of this radical imbalance. Hunting remains a vital tool used by state wildlife agencies to keep herd numbers from exploding even further. Hunting is also a unique way of deeply experiencing our ancient role in the food chain and understanding profoundly the price of being a carnivore; there are few acts as meaningful as taking complete responsibility for a life that ends in order that yours might continue. Wild venison is higher in protein and much lower in fat than beef. It contains no antibiotics or added hormones. Properly prepared, it is cut-with-a-fork tender and simply delicious. Advising on equipment, technique, and ethics, Jeff will provide you with a philosophical and practical start to harvesting your own lean organic meat with the bow and arrow. To take place during the 2010/11 Hunting Season on a mutually agreeable date.
