Item Description

Fly fishermen, take note! Bamboo fly-rod maker, internationally recognized artist, and GDS grandfather Jim Killy has built this 7'5'', 5 wt. Tonkin cane fly-fishing rod, with two tips, expressly for the GDS Auction. This rod features burgundy silk wraps, stainless guides, nickel silver ferrules, nickel silver reel seat hardware, and cork reel seat spacer and comes in a brown rod sock with a custom-built wooden hexagonal case. These artisan rods have sold in excess of $2000. The rod also comes with an assortment of flies hand tied by Jim and GDS's own Taylor Brown and Quinn Killy, as well as a day of fishing on the Gunpowder with Taylor and Quinn at a mutually agreeable date. If Jim is in town, he'll come, too! About the artist: Jim holds a B.F.A. from Columbus College of Art and Design and an M.D.A. from the University of Notre Dame. He was the primary faculty member specializing in sculpture at Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio, from 1976 until his retirement from full-time teaching in 2008. For his fly rods, Jim has raw Tonkin bamboo culms sent from the Guangdong province of South East China to his studio in rural Ohio. Tonkin cane is known for the superior strength and flexibility of its power fibers. Each hand-made rod takes more than 40 hours to construct.
