Did you know that the Northern Right Whale is an endangered species? Unfortunately, this is true. One contributing factor is that the Right Whales become entangled in the floating ground rope used by lobstermen.
Therefore, Maine lobstermen are turning in their floating lines for sinking ground lines. However, this comes at a high cost for lobstermen in time, effort, and of course the cost of new rope. As a result, there are huge quantities of discarded rope.
Out of every difficult situation comes an opportunity for positive change. By combining good ole' Yankee ingenuity with a sincere desire to help both the whales and the lobstermen, these mats are made from recycling the floating lines into "Mats from the Briny Deep"--which with their rope texture have proven to be very effective doormats, as well as a conversation piece!
