Curanderismo stems from the word “curar” which means to heal. Curanderismo is a Medicine of the people that incorporates body, mind, spirit and the emotions that manifest themselves as disharmony throughout the body. Connecting with a person’s soul is the most important part of Curanderismo – the place where healing takes place and this has become the state of being when you are in her presence. Many years ago and still in some places today where it was difficult to travel for medical care, and for many became impossible, communities turned to Curanderismo. This became the way of healing – trust, belief and faith in the miracles that took place and the Curandera performing the healing and is still very much in practice today. Some of the healing rituals were drawn from the cultural backgrounds of the people (both Curandera and the individual), family dynamics played an important role and of course the circumstances concerning the individual seeking assistance. In Curanderismo it is the religious convictions and spiritual beliefs that the folk healer utilizes in her treatments that facilitate healing. This is paramount in Curanderismo.

Even though her mother did not call herself a Shaman Curandera, she exhibited healing and spiritual practices of their teachings. She discovered that while studying Western teachings, she was being introduced to rituals and methods of healing that had long been a part of her life without realizing the significance of their nature. Her parents had no formal training in any of these methods. During her Western training, she found herself reliving some of the experiences she she learned from her parents. Janie came to embrace her gifts of healing and Curanderismo much later in life. She would describe it as "being herself" and throughout the years her business has become her. Curanderismo and Shamanism is in her blood, it is not a certificate that has been acquired in the Western World...it is a God-given gift of healing that was initiated at birth.
