Rudra Das was born in Dallas, Texas in the summer of 1971 and grew up in a conservative Christian home. He was first introduced to devotional music as a small boy in a full-gospel church and was always surrounded by music singing praises to God. He began playing the drums in the church services at age 5. His family were all musicians and music came very natural to him. Rudra Das had many deep Spiritual experiences as a child and young man. In the fall of 2003, Rudra Das had an experience that was to alter the course of his life. During a Pranayam (Yogic breathing exercise) class, he had a full kundalini release during which he had many wonderful things revealed to him. Rudra Das began Chanting and Mantra (Japa Yoga) work almost immediately after. In 2008, he was fortunate enough to spend nine days in an Ashram with renowned Kirtan leaders Bhagavan Das and Durga Das (aka David Newman). Through them he was immersed in the grace of Baba Neem Karoli (Maharaji). During this time he was initiated into this path and given the name Rudra Das.

Item Special Note

The simple definition is the call and response singing of the many names of the God/Goddess/Guru. It is a devotional practice, a limb of Yoga, and a mental and spiritual outlook all rolled into one. Kirtan or Bhakti Yoga is a spiritual path as true and impact full as any other. We celebrate all the wonderful diversity in this plane, and see all aspects and all beings as divine. Bhakti Yogi's choose to see the Divine form in all beings as opposed to all beings as one Divine form(Jnana). We can in turn worship all the myriad forms of the God/Goddess with ecstatic joy. As Sri Ramakrishna the great Bengali saint said: "I want to enjoy sugar not become one with it!"

Kirtan allows us to open our heart and surrender to it. We can then tap into the Universal Consciousness and as countless beings have done since time immemorial, we can cry out with love to be reunited with our beloved. We can then be reunited with the God/Goddess/Guru within that we are all searching for.
