Item Description
John Barber, a master glassblower and Southern California native, is a pioneer of the New Renaissance Glass movement. John Barber is renowned in Laguna Beach for demonstrating the Art of Glass Blowing at the Sawdust Festival, where he has exhibited his craft and taught students for more than 20 years. In 2006, John and his wife Rebecca founded the Studio Arts Gallery as a highly visible space for talented local artist to display their works.
For most of his career John has created vases, bowls and wine glasses, but he now also does major custom installations, including a work at the Montage Hotel and a piece for the City of Laguna. In the early 1970’s,he apprenticed with Erwin Eisch in Germany, completing an intensive two-year program at the celebrated State School for Glass Design in Zwiezel, where he studied the masters and also apprenticed under two notable American Master Glass Artists, Harvey Littleton and Dale Chihuly.
John took on the significant challenge of creating his violin-- “Crescendo in High C”-- entirely of glass. He had to start over several times and constructed the violin in three sections that adhere to one another to create the violin shape. John explained, “I sandblasted the surface, creating a matt finish, turned pegs with a whimsical touch, and made the base in the shape of a bell. In the end, I was quite pleased with the result.”
John’s violin will be displayed at Studio Arts Gallery, 1200 South Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach
