Item Description

As described by 5th grader, Mary Frances Gaston:

"Have you ever dreamed of what it might be like to have a valuable etching on your wall? Purchase this etching by Charles J.A. Wilson and make that dream come true. This magnificent piece shows the steamboat Robert E Lee with steam drifting out of its pipes and a beautiful reflection of the boat on the water beneath. You need this rare and beautiful work of art."

Robert E. Lee, etching, by Charles J.A. Wilson.   11 by 9 1/2 inches.

Born in Scotland, Charles J. A. Wilson emigrated to America and settled ultimately in Newton, Massachusetts. He studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1899-1902) and served in the American Navy for over 30 years. His works are almost exclusively marine or maritime in subject matter. In fact, he was a military artist in the navy. Wilson was stationed in France during the World War I. There and in subsequent years, he painted and etched American warships and marine views.  Wilson had shows throughout the United States from 1920 to 1950—in DC, New York, Boston, St. Louis, San Francisco, and San Diego. His works still appear regularly in marine exhibitions and auctions.
