Item Description
By Don Scafidi. Oil on canvas, 35 by 30 inches.
Scafidi's works are often precise depictions of boats on the water, with lines and sails, hulls and tillers drawn with almost photographic realism. An artist whose work is sought after by collectors of marine-related imagery, Scafidi’s artistic education occurred when he traveled the seas on board ships and served as Pier Superintendent in New York City, U.S. delegate to NATO, and commanded ships for the marines at the beginning of his career. Later, he started his own shipping company in New Orleans. He began painting in earnest in 1986 (he is self taught) doing commissions depicting some of the great boats of this country’s history. He’s a hard man to find, but he has lived on Saint Croix and most recently in Southern Louisiana painting and sailing his 40-foot Bristol cutter, Linda.
