Item Description

12" long, carved from walnut this spoon includes a cross, intertwined vines, and a diamond shape, which represent faith, togetherness and growth, and prosperity, respectively.

The tradition began in the 17th century in Wales, and started as a courtship gift. A young man of the working classes (a farmer or a sailor) would carve romantic symbols into the handle of a spoon to declare his intentions towards the girl who had stolen his heart. The spoon was always carved from a single piece of wood, and any symbols could be used, as long as they were meaningful to both of them. If she accepted the spoon, it meant she returned his feelings, and a courtship would begin. These days, lovespoons are given for any special occasion that warrants a heartfelt gift, but the rules remain the same: they are still always carved from a single piece of wood, and while you'll often see symbols that have been used for hundreds of years, any symbols can be used, as long as they convey a message from the giver to the recipient. The tradition was very prevalent in Wales, but existed in many cultures across the continents.

Laura Blake Gorun started carving lovespoons seriously in 2009, putting her fine arts degree to good use, after nearly 20 years in the corporate world. She is very pleased to be carrying on such a lovely tradition, and hopes her contributions are kept and handed down through generations like those of her predecessors. More spoons can be seen on the Web at www.BlakesPA.com.
