Music is the Magic Oil/Acrylic on linen 6 x 9 JoAnn Huges came late to painting, with a background in psychology and theology. She paints to think, to speak it is essential to her sense of well-being and to her commitment to others. Painting is a practice, a process of contemplation and action. She also paints for the pure pleasure it brings her, and the hope of creating beauty. JoAnn has studied with painters Joan Snyder, Wolf Kahn and Sam Feinstein. Other people who have influenced JoAnns work include painters Kathe Kollwitz, Paula Modersohn-Becker and Nancy Spero, as well as poets Adrienne Rich, Gabriela Mistral and Audre Lorde. Additionally, theologians and scholars Elizabeth Schussler Fiorenza, Carter Hayward and Francine Cardman have also impacted her work. Her paintings have been exhibited in New York City, San Francisco, Santa Fe, Cambridge, Cape Cod and Ireland, and her work lives in many private collections.
