Item Description

Majolica pottery gained international acclaim in the 16th century. Although Spanish and Italian potters both created in the Matilda style, the center of the movement focused on two Italian cities, Urbino and Venice. Venice tradesmen borrowed from both Islamic designs and Greek arabesque pieces to fashion majolica pottery. These Venetian works featured leaves and branches intertwined in ornate patterns. This bird vase is a perfect representation of this type of pottery;
