2014 Productions:
The Magic Flute by W.A. Mozart
Love and loyalty propel Mozart’s final opera as we journey with Prince Tamino through trials and tribulations, which are overcome by perseverance and victory. A brilliant combination of comedy and profundity, it is no wonder that this operatic fantasy sits high among the most popular operas of all time. A vindictive queen, a lovesick bird catcher, and a clan of high priests enliven Tamino’s quest for his newfound love, Pamina. Returning artists include Kyle Pfortmiller as Papageno, Vale Rideout as Tamino, Sarah Beckham as Pamina, and Jeffrey Beruanas Sarastro in this new production by Nelson Sheeley.
Performances: June 14e, June 17m, June 22m, June 26e, June 28e
Sung in German with English dialogue and translations projected above the stage.
The Elixir of Love by G. Donizetti
What makes you giddy? What gives you confidence? Sometimes that magical elixir is simply a bottle of cheap wine. Regardless, self-belief can be a powerful aphrodisiac. Simpleton Nemorino longs in vain for the beautiful and popular Adina, who instead gives her attention to the young stud Belcore. Enter the mischievous Dr. Dulcamara, and the tables turn for the simple hero. Director and company favorite Helena Binder brings her storytelling prowess to this romantic comedy, which features former company young artists Brian Downen as Nemorino and Seth Mease Carico as Dulcamara, performing alongside company debutantes Maureen Francisas Adina and Gregory Gerbrandt as Belcore.
Performances: June 21e, June 24m, June 27e, June 29m
Sung in Italian with English translations projected above the stage.
Roscoe by Evan Mack (Workshop performace of Act I)
Exploring Albany politics of the 1940s, Evan Mack’s new opera, currently in development and based on William Kennedy’s novel by the same name, is tragic, comic, poignant, and romantic. Roscoe Conway, after twenty-six years as the second in command of Albany’s notorious political machine, decides to quit politics forever. But there’s no way out, and only his Machiavellian imagination can help him cope with the erupting disasters. Every step leads back to the past – to the early loss of his true love, the takeover of City Hall, the machine’s fight with FDR and Al Smith to elect a governor, and the methodical assassination of gangster Jack (Legs) Diamond. Opera Saratoga’s 2014 young artists bring this work to life in a workshop performance of Act 1. This 80-minute presentation will help the opera’s creative team refine the work and provide you the opportunity to hear it first!
