James Dean was born in Marion, Indiana in 1931. His appearance in school drama productions determined his ambition to be an actor. After some smaller roles in television, film, and on the New York stage, Dean's movie career took off with his acclaimed work in East of Eden, but was tragically cut short when he died in an auto accident, aged 24, just a few months after the film's release. Two other films, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant, were released posthumously. In all of these films, Dean portrayed the lonely, misunderstood outsider, galvanizing audiences with his fragility and grace. He is buried in Fairmount, Indiana, where he was raised by an aunt and uncle.
