Recommend for Middle School and up
This, the only memoir published by a former Schindler’s List child, perfectly captures the innocence of a small boy who goes through the unthinkable. Most notable is the lack of rancor, the lack of venom, and the abundance of dignity in Mr. Leyson’s telling. The Boy on the Wooden Box is a legacy of hope, a memoir unlike anything you’ve ever read.--Amazon
Simply put, this book was wonderful. A biography for children written by a man who experienced WW2 as a persecuted Jewish child. For the most part, it's what you would generally expect from such a book, telling of horrific days, weeks, years in ghettos and camps but what makes it a good one for children/early teens is that it carries a message of hope and humanity too… Shannon, GoodReads
I loved this book! It's a straightforward memoir, perfectly suited for YA readers. I was impressed with the brilliant descriptions of such horrific events. Truly a moving piece of work and a must read for those interested in the holocaust. –Amy, GoodReads
I would recommend this anecdotal story of Leyson's survival from Nazi brutality for students from middle school, especially. It will give them accurate details without imparting the overwhelming grief that some writers share. As a teacher I have read many of the survivor stories. Each has its own unique viewpoint. I appreciated his observations about the differences between the two world wars. His personal struggles to recover and then thrive reveals the very best of the American ethnic fabric.—J. An insightful well written memoir of a holocaust survivor. This was one of the best books I had the privilege to read this year. The author was an extraordinary individual who never lost his humanity despite the horrible things he had done to him and his family. Should be required reading. Read it, you won't be disappointed.—Swampsister, Amazon
