Girl with a black cat
Charlotte Andry Gibbs, artist

Courtesy of Beth Urdang Gallery - Boston and Wellesley, Massachusetts

The inspiration for this work came from Henri Matisse's Fauvist portrait of his daughter, Marguerite, with her cat (Girl with a black cat, 1910). But the subject is Charlotte's granddaughter, Rosie (who could indeed be a McGehee girl should she live in New Orleans), and her cat, Pansy. The style, however, is not Matisse but her own, a synthesis of influences that includes early American primitive portrait painting, Japanese Edo period art, and the work of American painter/printmaker Will Barnet, whose paintings of family members and their pets (from the 1960s) made a lasting impression on her as a young artist. All of these influences favored a simplification of visual information, a kind of abstraction, and reduction to the essential pictorial elements, which to her mind helps create a more universal image.
