A little history on the Ichthus symbol: According to an ancient story, when a Christian met a stranger on a road, the Christian sometimes drew one arc of the simple fish outline in the dirt. If the stranger drew the other arc, both believers knew the other was a Christian. Today we see this symbol on the back of cars and on jewelry to often share the same message. As we have just celebrated Valentine’s Day, we discussed with the children how God IS love and wants us to share His love with everyone, starting with each other! With all of the challenging things going on in this world, we thought it would be super special for the children to have the opportunity to make drawings that ended up in the shape of an Ichthus and then to surround their precious drawings with a verse from God’s Word that seemed to sum it all up which is John 13:35: “By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” We put “if you have LOVE for one another in the center” because we believe that was the most important part of the verse and also felt that even if you read the canvas straight down instead of around the Ichthus and then in the center, it still communicates the same important message. We pray that each and every child and anyone who sees this canvas will share God’s love and show others that they are His disciples.
