Item Description
"You open the in-flight magazine to discover odd bits and pieces of imagery ripped away, missing. There’s a hole in the newspaper. And the cereal box won’t close—one of the flaps is gone. I confess: I couldn’t help myself. I’ve salvaged a compelling fragment to inspire (or add to) another collage composition. Collected ingredients bring inherent energy and potential. In time, with patience, this paper trail leads to unexpected destinations. Rearranged reality, assembled moments, and constructed views materialize in my collages. The work always, sometimes inexplicably, reflects and informs my creative growth / life journey. Here’s to the unexpected beauty of everyday materials—my palette of paper fragments—liberated from their original context, salvaged, ripped, and repurposed anew!” Janice McDonald is an internationally-recognized collagist who creates elegant collages from her collection of salvaged papers from junk mail, magazines, packaging, old posters, and other cast-off materials. Her work has been included in exhibitions across the US and throughout the world. Her collages find homes with individual collectors, in site-specific commissions, and in corporate collections. Janice is a signature member of the National Collage Society and helps moderate an online group for the International Museum of Collage, Assemblage, and Construction. Janice is affiliated with Spark Gallery in Denver, Colorado. Follow her collage process on instagram at janicemcdonaldart. More information at www.janicemcdonald.com.
“Foundling"… This collage found its whimsical character amidst orphaned paper fragments and recycled imagery. The mask form was altered with layers of glued paper elements to suggest facial features. Ripped edges, and an unusual wet process that melds the papers together, yield a mask design that invites repeated exploration. Abstract when viewed from afar, the individual elements reveal themselves upon closer examination. And the interpretation is up to you!
