Item Description
Parenting a child with intellectual and developmental disabilities can be confusing, isolating, and challenging; yet with these, come other rewards. These challenges and rewards are captured in honest and heartwarming detail in Simple Perseverance, a new book co-authored by fifteen mothers in Boston’s South Shore.
Simple Perseverance shares personal histories of raising a child with autism, Down syndrome, or other disability. These fifteen stories by members of a Mothers’ Group are told in intimate, pull-no-punches prose. These mothers turned to each other for emotional support and friendship while they were raising their children with developmental disabilities. Faith, family, and friends helped them to persevere through the hopes and realities of the early years, medical crises, the successes and disappointments of school years, and the trials of adolescence and adulthood. Now as they and their children grow older, their conversations have changed to residential options, maintaining jobs, forming relationships, and end of life issues – their own.
