Allan is internationally known for his teaching and research in new crops for the garden and greenhouse. His New Crop Program has produced numerous introductions for the ornamental market. As a teacher, one of Allan’s hallmarks is his ability to engage his students in real world experiences. He has been recognized for his work with many awards, including the American Horticultural Society’s distinguished Teaching Award and prestigious Liberty Hyde Bailey Award. He is in constant demand as a lecturer, having spoken in nearly all the states as well as Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Columbia, Holland, Germany, and Greece. Although he has retired after many years of teaching, Allan is as dedicated as ever to promoting horticulture. Some of Allan’s current projects include his popular gardening App, “Armitage’s Greatest Perennials and Annuals,” and a recently published book, “It’s Not Just About the Hat.”
