Item Description

Material- Manure, Metal mesh, Two maple trees

A detail shot of a 12 foot earthen sculpture made by the artist. Tucked away on the trail system at Salem Art Works, the piece undulates between two trees, at once dividing and inhabiting the space.

Anika Cartterfield is a sculptor whose work focuses on the intersection of the handmade and the mechanized. Using clay, earth, wood, fiber, metal, and plastic, she creates objects and paintings that celebrate both the designed and the intuitive.

Anika was a Corps Member in 2013 and Crew Leader in 2014 and 2015. She reflects that her VYCC experiences were life changing; they affirmed her passion for conservation, her love of working with her hands, and her dedication to creating opportunities where women have space to support one another to excel in physical trades.

Anika now lives and works at Salem Art Works sculpture center in upstate New York, where she creates her own work and supports visiting artists to do the same.
