Learning from the Best – Four Young Winemakers and their Wines
It has been said that if you choose a job you love, you’ll never work a day in your life…and isn’t it also true that if you work with the best, your work will always be the best?
And so begins another generation of winemakers and their impeccable wines...
These four young winemakers have all apprenticed with and learned from celebrated winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown. Here is a collection of their personal wine endeavors, and the lucky winning bidder will enjoy a tasting of these wines with the winemakers, schedules permitting, at the stunning new Mending Wall Winery.
from John Giannini, three 750 ml 2013 Cresta Velia Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
After fifteen years as an accomplished chef in top tier restaurants, John Giannini worked a harvest with winemaker Thomas Brown in 2003, and was bitten by the wine bug. He joined the Outpost team in 2006, where he works as Thomas’s Assistant Winemaker. John founded Cresta Velia, named for his mother and grandmother, in 2010.
from Anne Fogerty, three 750 ml 2014 Belharra Syrah Las Madres Vineyards
For Anne Fogerty, employment in the vineyards led to a job in a winery, and the opportunity for more learning and even longer days. Caught up in the promise of adventure and travel in wine production, Anne followed harvests around the world after college, always landing back in northern California among family and friends. She began working with Thomas at Outpost in 2010, where she is presently Cellar Master.
from Mathew Nagy, two 750 ml 2014 whole cluster Syrah and one 750 ml 2015 whole cluster Grenache from the Las Madres Vineyard
Matthew began his love of wine during a wine and spirits class at the University of South Carolina. He worked three harvests in the Napa Valley that landed him with another Southerner, Thomas, at Outpost in 2011. He then moved to Mending Wall to become cellar master. Traveling to the other hemisphere to work harvests on our off season, he always makes his way back to Calistoga for ours.
From Tim Beranek, three 750 ml 2014 Young Hagen Riddle Vineyard Pinot Noir
Tim Beranek left the golf course where he had toured with his pro card and headed out to the wild west to seek California and wine. His love of wine work began at Kosta Brown but by 2011 he had joined Thomas Brown and the team at Outpost. He now is the assistant winemaker and runs the day to day operations of Mending Wall. Having learned from the best, he now has his own label – Young Hagen wines.
