Item Description
Under Debbie Dicker’s tutelage over the course of multiple art sessions, our second graders received formal instruction in self-portraiture. The kids studied their faces with focus and concentration. Using paper, pencil and a mirror, the kids drew their own likeness onto a page, resulting in 22 whimsical line drawings.
The self-portraits were then scanned, converted into a digital file, turned into negative film to produce a physical “plate” with elevated graphics, and finally prepared for press. This “digital to physical” transition is a modernization of the art of letterpress printing, which is the oldest technique in printing dating back to the 15th century. The plate is inked with black rubber-based ink and pressed into 110 pound paper, producing an “impression”. Our piece was printed on a Vandercook Universal III printing press in San Francisco on Rives BFK paper (100 percent cotton and acid-free). The final print was signed by our 2nd grade artists and then custom-framed with UV protective glass by the professionals at Sausalito Picture Framing on Caledonia Street in Sausalito.
