Item Description
Raku firing is a unique and fascninating type of firing. A glowing hot vessel or sculpture is pulled from the kiln at about 1850 degrees and placed in a combustibles in a metal trash can. The can is then covered, smothering the flames and creating a smoky reduction chamber. The glazes respond in various ways to the reduced oxygen, and unglazed portions of the piece turn black from the carbon in the smoke. The results are always unpredictable and each raku pottery piece is truly one of a kind.
Item Special Note
This is a decorative piece and not meant for food or water. Created by Judi Harwood with The Village Potters in Asheville, NC.
