Item Description
Paul Stein—also known as Popka, or Nelson's grandpa—has been a violinist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1981. He teaches violin and viola in Monrovia, has been on the Glendale College faculty since 1990, and has been a Visiting Artist at California Institute of Technology. He has conducted seminars on music and performance for teachers' organizations and for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute. He has published articles in the journals of the American String Teacher and the California Music Teacher.
Trained at Southern Methodist University and Yale University, Mr. Stein was a member of the Santa Fe Opera and served as principal second violinist with the Colorado Symphony. He has been a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1982, and has worked with Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, Andre Previn, and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
He has produced and performed numerous chamber music programs with the California Classical Ensemble for the Midsummer Nights' Music series at the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center.
