Item Description

You are bidding on an authentic "The Redleg Wrecking Crew" painting by Bill Purdom!

It is April 17, 1956.  Opening Day for the Redlegs.  Pictured is the calm before the season-long storm that would place this team firmly in the thunderous midst of the greatest home run hitting teams ever.  It all started on this day when third baseman Ray Joblonski homered in the second inning.  By the time the dust settled on Sept. 29, the "Western Avenue Bombers" - a nickname that arose because Western Avenue ran behind the center field fence - had walloped the stunning total of 221 home runs to tie the Major League record set by the Giants in 1947.  In one stretch they hit at least one home run in 21 games in a row, while on another occasion they clubbed eight home runs in a single game.  The Redlegs were the first team to have five players hit more than 25 homers apiece.  In the glorious summer of '56, these Redlegs left an indelible mark on the record book, tying or setting 10 Major League slugging records.

The team's loving fans came out in record numbers, as the club's season-long home run assault combined with a race for the pennant resulted in Crosley Field drawing more than 1 million fans for the first time in history.  The team garnered its first Sports Illustrated cover and in one of baseball's truly golden decades stood shoulder to shoulder with the great Brooklyn Dodger and Milwaukee Brave nines as the rewrote the record books.  As a momento of their historical season the team awarded each player with rings inscribed with the number "221."

Shown in this painting are some of the Cincinnati legends from this great team: center fielder Gus Bell, catcher Ed Bailey, pitcher Brooks Laawrence, catcher Smoky Burgess, right fielder Frank Robinson, pitcher Joe Nuxhall, first baseman Ted Kluszewski, shortstop Roy McMillan, left fielder Wally Post, and second baseman Johnny Temple.
