Item Description

Dr. Bath was a 2014 “Women Inspiring Innovations Through Imagination” Honoree.   She later served on our Board of Directors.   She has been nominated for the National Inventors Hall of Fame particularly on the merits of her invention of the Laserphaco Probe, which helped revolutionize the way to restore vision to millions by laser surgeries.
Dr.Patricia Bath’s invention of the Laserphaco Probe was an important milestone in the advent of laser cataract surgery. Dr. Bath, an ophthalmologist and inventor, co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness in 1976 to “protect, preserve, and restore the gift of sight.”  She broke ground for both women and African Americans in medicine and ophthalmology, including being the first African American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical purpose.
