About Larry Strickland

From the mid-1970s, artist Larry Strickland, a former U.S. Army illustrator, worked as a professional painter using oil, acrylic, and watercolor. He specialized in Southern landscapes and genre paintings and was commissioned by Troy University to paint this print of the Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts.

Larry Strickland is an alumnus of Troy University. The Davis Theatre print depicts known people or famous people going into the theatre, such as Hank Williams, Sr., Rosa Parks, Dr. & Mrs. Jack Hawkins, and former Mayor Todd Strange & his wife Linda. Coming out of the theatre is the late Bubba Trottman and a friend of his. The original artwork is hanging in the lobby of the Davis Theatre.

A native of Florala, Strickland attended Troy State University following high school but was drafted into the Army, where he served as an illustrator during the Vietnam War. After the war, Strickland furthered his career at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Fla., where he graduated at the top of his class. He later returned to Troy State to compete his degree in 1984.

Strickland has shown his artwork extensively throughout the United States in both solo and group exhibitions. His works have been acquired by a long list of art patrons and private collectors throughout the world. He has had work accepted for the American Watercolor Society Exhibit in New York and has been accepted for exhibition in various shows such as The Jean Lake Memorial Art Show, The Greater New Orleans International Art Exhibit, and The Kentuck Festival.

Strickland is also known for his 9-foot-tall bronze Trojan Warrior sculpture, which was completed in 2004 and soars above the Academic Quad on Troy University’s campus. Similar statues can be found at the University’s campuses in Dothan, Montgomery, and Phenix City, as well as one overlooking the football field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy
