Item Description
An Epic Voyage, An Epic Collection.
Banks' Florilegium is a collection of copperplate engravings of plants collected by Sir Joseph Banks and Dr. Daniel Solander while they accompanied Captain James Cook on his voyage around the world between 1768 and 1771. Following the voyage, Banks commissioned a team of five artists to complete Sydney Parkinson's watercolors and then a team of eighteen skilled engravers who engraved the copper plates.
Exquisite line engraving by Daniel MacKenzie after Sydney Parkinson (1769). Wikstroemia foetida (now correctly referred to as Wikstroemia coriacea) is native to Eastern Polynesia, and related to the Hawaiian akia. Collected on the island of Otaheite [Tahiti) in 1769 by Sir Joseph Banks and Dr. Daniel Solander.
