Item Description
The Alula (Brighamia insignis) is an unusual looking plant with single bright yellow, fragrant, flowers at the end of long stems. Alula were once found throughout the windswept sea cliffs of Kauai and Niihau. When the artist painted this beautiful watercolor in 2016, there was thought to be only one plant left in the wild, on Kauai's Napali Coast. In 2021, he heard that the plant had died and Alula is now extinct in the wild. Its extinction is due, in part, to feral goats, harsh weather, and the decline or possible extinction of natural pollinators. Fortunately, due to the passion and hard work of employees and volunteers at National Tropical Botanical Garden, there are many Alula in the world today, due to hand-pollination, manual propagation, and exquisite care of this unique plant. Alan Akana is a Native Hawaiian watercolorist who specializes in painting the flowers that are indigenous to the islands of Hawaii. He lives in Koloa and hikes throughout Hawaii in order to find flowers to paint.
A 12X18" certified print of a watercolor by local Hawaiian artist Alan Akana, beautifully presented in a frame from Christian Riso Fine Art and Framing in Koloa.
