Item Description

Kauai Woodturner Robin Clark

Koa (Acacia koa) is an endemic tree of the Hawaiian Islands. Koa wood is highly valued for its figure and color and is regarded as the premier wood of the islands by woodworkers. The wood for this bowl was salvaged from a tree that fell near the Kokee Museum on Kauai.

This is a 15.5 x 5.5 inch natural edge bowl in which the bark is fixed with cyanoacrylate glue. The bowl can be used for salad or fruit and has a durable hard wax finish which if desired can be renewed over time by application of a paste wax.

Robin Clark is an NTBG Fellow who moved to Kauai from California in 2001. He has subsequently pursued his long dormant interest in woodworking and makes bowls, jewelry boxes, and indoor and outdoor furniture. His woodshop in Lawai is solar (photovoltaic) powered and was featured in American Woodworker Magazine. He works with native and non-native woods which are available in abundance from his tree-trimming friends.
