Item Description

JOHN GOULD LITHOGRAPH
FLORISUGA FLABELLIFERA, Gould, Great Jacobin, Plate 114

John Gould (1804-1881) is the most recognized and respected bird artist after Audubon. Gould, an Englishman, is credited with the discovery of hundreds of new bird species. He published great volumes devoted to all species of birds, which contained extraordinary hand-colored lithographic plates. Working with his artist wife Elizabeth who did much of the hand-colooring, and in conjunction with fellow lithographers H.C. Richter and William Hart, John Gould published what is considered his greatest work, his volume on hummingbirds which was published between 1849 and 1861. Only when he journeyed to America with his son in 1857 did he first see a live hummingbird. ""With what delight did I examine its tiny body, and feast my eyes on its glittering plumage"", wrote Gould.

The ""Monograph of the Trochilidae"", is regarded as a monumental achievement in both the technical and artistic realms. The work initially comprised 360 unique lithographs, brilliantly hand-colored to duplicate the iridescent quality of the hummingbird's feathers and include the flowers appropriate to the birds. A supplement of 58 additional lithographs was published posthumously. Although modern reproduction prints are available, it is estimated that only 250 copies of each lithograph in the collection was originally produced. Thus they are highly sought after by collectors.

These original lithographs are on 100% rag matting and are framed in Koa. They were recently cleaned by the Art Shop in Lihue.
