ABOUT SATORU ABE:

Born in Moiliili, Hawaii, Satoru Abe is a highly regarded sculptor and one of the Islands’ most prolific artists that has earned recognition from Hawaii to New York. Attending President William McKinley High School, he pursued his artistic passion early, taking lessons from Shirley Russell and American artists known for her paintings of Hawaii. Abe later mentored under Maui-born muralist, watercolorist and printmaker Hon Chew

Hee and decided to pursue an art career in New York. On his way to The Big Apple, he spent a summer studying at the California School for Fine Arts before attending the Art Students League of New York. Returning to marry his wife Ruth in 1950, Abe met a local artist Isami Doi who would become a close friend and mentor. Abe forged into the world of welding at this time and with Doi, began a series of copper work experiments. Forming the Metcalf Chateau or The Group of Seven, Abe with six other Asian American artists began hosting group exhibitions in 1954.

In 1956, Abe returned to New York and found a creative home at the SculptureCenter, where his work attracted the attention of gallery owners and others before he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1963.

Abe is best known for his sculptures of abstracted natural forms, many of which resemble trees, such as East and West in the collection of the Hawaii State Art Museum. He also painted. Two Abstract Figures in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art typifies this aspect of his work. The Honolulu Museum of Art and the Hawaii State Art Museum are among the public collections that hold Abe’s works.
