(4) Orchestra Seats to Musical Theatre Guild's "Grey Gardens"
Monday, February 27, 2023 - 7:30PM
Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale, CA 91203
The musical is inspired by the Maysles Brothers’ famous documentary on “Big Edie” and “Little Edie” Bouvier, once polished members of high society, now living in squalor on the grounds of their crumbling East Hampton mansion, Grey Gardens, among dozens of cats and a few rabid raccoons.
Not content to simply musicalize the film, Pulitzer prize-winning librettist Doug Wright creates a speculative backstory set in the family’s heyday of wealth and privilege. This addition gives context to the ladies’ life choices and offers them a humanity the unblinking camera lens does not.
Composer Scott Frankel and Lyricist Michael Korie create melodic songs in the style of the 1940’s to showcase the Bouvier Family, including a young Jacqueline, at the pinnacle of their success. The songs for the second half are more character-driven and move smoothly from the bizarre, “Jerry Likes My Corn,” to the truly sublime, “Another Winter in a Summer Town.”
The roles in GREY GARDENS are challenging both dramatically and musically. Musical Theatre Guild will rise to that challenge with a cast that can bring this unique show to vivid life.
Musical Theatre Guild is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit membership company of theatre professionals, devoted to preserving the unique American art form of musical theatre by presenting seldom-seen musicals in a staged reading concert format. Members represent over 60 Broadway shows, 79 Broadway National Tours, countless regional productions, cast recordings, solo albums, voice-overs, commercials, film & television appearances, plus dozens of Ovation, Drama Desk, and Tony Award nominations.
MTG’s Youth Outreach Program takes specially prepared live performances into Southern California schools, brings hundreds of local high school students to live theatre performances and offers mentorships to theatre students who shadow our professionals behind the scenes of mainstage productions. All Musical Theatre Guild mainstage productions are signed for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing.
