ABOUT YVONNE CHENG:

Yvonne Cheng was born in 1941 in Surabaya, East Java. She was raised in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital. From an early age she was educated in Dutch schools and privately tutored in art. In 1967, she moved to Honolulu where she enrolled in a batik class at Bishop Museum. She used batik as her primary medium from1970 until the early 1980’s.

She has done extensive research into the visual patterns of tapa cloth and other Oceanic textiles found in museum collections. She celebrates the pattern work of tapa through the use of her native batik processes, it is this medium she is most identified with. She later moved towards painting on canvas, pastels, collage and ink drawing as a natural progression into her work with color and the Polynesian figure.

Her work is represented in numerous public and private collections in batik, paintings, Venetian mosaic tiles and stained glass. Examples of major public commissions are on public display with the Hawaii States Art in Public Places Collection, University of Hawaii’s Hamilton Library, Grand Wailea Resort, First Hawaiian Bank and the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
