Item Description
"Not A Bluefish" by Ellen Garvey
Medium: Glass
Size: 19" x 8"
Artist Statement:
I work with both blown and fused glass so this year I am combining those in a unique way. Using glassblowing techniques, I pulled several colors of glass cane, then cut them into small pieces. I created the eye using fusing glass taken to "full fuse" temperature. I arranged the cane and eye into the shape of the cod and fused them just enough to create a solid piece but leave the texture. The shades of blue and resulting texture evoke the movement and colors of the sea and her inhabitants.
Artist Biography:
Ellen has been a glass blower for several years. She started by taking a glassblowing class as a way to escape from her demanding career in high tech. It wasn't long before she was hooked. It's hot, dirty, expensive, and demanding: perfect. When the pandemic hit, glassblowing ground to a halt. So glass fusing - which she had previously just dabbled in - moved to the front burner. So now blowing and fusing alternate for her attention. She is an instructor of blown and fused glass at Diablo Glass School in Boston, a juried Artist Member of Marblehead Arts Association and Salted Cod Arthouse Gallery (of the Rocky Neck Art Colony) in Gloucester, MA, a member of the executive team at Salted Cod, an active volunteer and three-term board member of the Marblehead Festival of Arts and artist member and past board member of the Salem Arts Association, artist member at Galleries at Lynn Arts.
