Barbara Johansen Newman has been making art for over 50 years. Initially, she worked as a puppeteer and created figurative soft sculptures, which she exhibited in galleries throughout the US and Canada. In 1982, she began a 35-year career as an illustrator, and has illustrated and/or authored more than 24 childrens books. In 2017 she returned to her first love, which is painting. Her paintings, which combine elements of edge and funk, have been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the US.

"Black Bear in Zebra Grass, No. 3" was created by Johansen Newman while spending time at her home in Hebron, NH, where the black bears are plentiful and sometimes spotted on hillsides and in fields on any given day. She finds the creatures to be soulful animals whose faces evoke a sense of character and individuality.

The artist has graciously agreed to start the bidding at $300.
