The Thirteenth Annual Hawaii Food & Wine Festival's The Art of Food & Wine has become a platform to showcase artists of all mediums—painters, sculptors, mixed media, ceramics, photography, florals and even augmented reality! Feast your eyes, and tastebuds, on culinary works of art inspired by esteemed local artists and up-and-coming creatives.

ABOUT THE PAINTING:

This work came from discussions between Enos and Chef Cedric Vongerichten, relating to his life experiences leading up to his profession and successful culinary career. His origins span the globe, from Vietnam to France and New York, and now though his growing family, he has made a deep connection with Indonesia. After researching the many restaurants he has opened in New York and across Asia, and with a focus on Indonesian cuisine, Enos chose to base this image on the Indonesian National motto: Unity through Diversity, and reversed it as Diversity through Unity. It is a nod towards the way Chef Cedric makes flavors bloom by combining various ingredients which become greater then the sum of their parts with every bite.

ABOUT SOLOMON ENOS:

Solomon Robert Nui Enos is a Native Hawaiian artist, illustrator, and visionary. Born and raised in Makaha Valley (Oahu, Hawaii), Solomon hails from the well-known Enos ohana. Enos has been making art for more than 30 years and he is adept at artistic expression in a wide variety of media including oil paintings, book illustrations, murals, and game design. A self-described “Possibilist” Eno’s art expresses an informed aspirational vision of the world at its best via contemporary and traditional art that leans towards Sci-Fi and Fantasy. His work touches on themes like collective-consciousness, ancestry and identity, our relationship with our planet, and all through the lens of his experience as a person indigenous to Hawaii.

Solomon Enos has exhibited in Biennial X (Honolulu Museum of Art), 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Queensland Art Gallery), CONTACT art exhibitions, and others. His work is held in private collections and in the public collections of the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and Hawaii State Art Museum. He has led numerous community mural projects and has received art commissions for hotels, corporate offices, public buildings, and schools in Hawaii. His latest works include murals and augmented-reality installations for Google and Disney.

The painting can be viewed at the Art Gallery at Halekulani until November 6, 2023.

Proceeds from this item will be split between the artist (70%) and HFWF (30%), with HFWF's proceeds going towards a scholarship to a fine art student at the University of Hawaii.
