ABOUT HAWKES
"We first planted Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County in 1972, 12 years before Alexander Valley became an appellation. Back then, there weren’t very many vineyards here, much less opportunities to taste the wine from them. Alexander Valley was planted to prunes and apples and hops, mixed field blends for jug wine; Healdsburg was the Buckle of the Prune Belt; my dad was dreaming big and making wine in the basement. 30 years later, we made the first vintage of wine under our own name – Hawkes – 100% estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley, grown and crushed and barreled and bottled by our family."
PRIVATE RESERVE TASTING
This is an opportunity to taste our tiny production estate Cabernet and learn about our vineyards in detail. This tasting includes six Cabernets in all, ranging from wine still in the barrel to special selections from the library and seasonal bites. Please plan for a 90-minute experience.
2019 ALEXANDER VALLEY CABERNET 1.5L
Our Alexander Valley Estate Cabernet is always one hundred percent varietal and always a blend of fruit from all three of the vineyards we farm. We don't aim to make the same wine every year, we aim to make the best wine possible every year. And that means our Estate Cabernet changes from vintage to vintage. The through line is balance. The 2019 shows loads of dark fruit both in the aroma and on the palate; I get black cherry and plum and blackberry. But this is not a ponderous, top-heavy wine. The acid is bright and the tannins are long and lean. Complex but very, very drinkable (now through 2030)
