Item Description

https://www.nativeartsandcultures.org/sabra-kauka

Celebrated as one of the most influential na wahine alakai (women leaders) of Kaua’i, Sabra shares her passion for Hawaiian culture by educating youth and adults alike. An expert kapa maker and a longtime friend of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, she is a historian, environmentalist, anthropologist, activist, educator, and a respected cultural leader.

Before the arrival of Westerners, Hawaiians made clothing and blankets from tree bark in a process known as kapa. Today, Sabra Kauka is passing on the teachings to the next generation.

Kapa is a Hawaiian cloth made from the wauke, or paper mulberry tree. It has deep cultural meaning to native Hawaiians, and the history of kapa includes both making and dyeing. Learning to make kapa in the traditional way preserves and perpetuates this native art.

In this comprehensive and unique 6-hour cultural workshop in McBryde Garden, you will learn to:
- identify the plant
- tend the plant
- harvest some stalks, following Hawaiian protocol asking for permission
- remove the outer bark using traditional methods
- pound the pieces
- pound a watermark into the kapa and dry it

*All materials and tools provided
*Bring your lunch and reusable water bottle (NTBG is a plastic water bottle free zone)
*Mutually agreed date with Sabra Kauka

*Expires 8/31/2025
