Deepen your appreciation of wine with this unique opportunity to tour vineyards and wineries with the people who actually grow the grapes and make the wine in Sonoma’s newest appellation, the prestigious Petaluma Gap!
Stay for 2 nights in a charming guest house near Petaluma’s historic downtown and begin your wine adventure. First, a “garagiste” will demonstrate how home winemakers set up a mini-winery and create award-winning wines. (If it is harvesting time, prepare to be a “cellar rat” and help with the crush.) Then, of course, taste the hand-crafted wines.
Your journey continues with a visit to the picturesque McEvoy Ranch in the hills of Marin County. A lovely lunch, overlooking the ponds and olive groves, is followed by a tasting of McEvoy’s distinctive wines, plus a tasting of their award winning olive oil. Learn how olives are grown and pressed, and taste the differences between French and Spanish varieties and flavored oils.
The adventure continues the next day with brunch at Paradise Vineyards and an introduction to the expressive and unusual wines produced by 37 Winery ( chardonnay and pinot noir, of course, but also Albarino, Riesling, malbec, cabernet franc . . .). The owners will host you at their home, on a patio overlooking San Francisco Bay, and describe their philosophy of grape growing and wine making, and how their wines express the terroir of the Petaluma Gap.
Next, on to an urban winery in downtown Petaluma. Brooks Note is a boutique winery started by Garry Brooks, a vintner known for lovely nuanced wines. Garry’s philosophy is to let the wine develop with minimal interference so they can be pure expressions of the terroir. You will tour the winery with Garry, then, of course, taste his wines.
No visit to Petaluma would be complete without exploring the historic riverfront town. You will have time to sample its many restaurants and shops. Walking tours are also offered to view the colorful Victorian homes (and for movie buffs there is a tour of homes featured in many films, e.g. “American Graffiti.”)
This is truly an “insider’s” look at winemaking, a chance to “meet the makers” and share the passion that goes into that bottle.
