Item Description

Photography

16" x 20" x 1"

Joe Rattie is a retired nurse who enrolled in college in 2020 to pursue an art degree. Last spring, he was accepted into the Photography BFA Program at RIC. Over the past two years, Rattie has been forced to put his photography on hold as the demands of required art courses consumed all of his free time and creative energies. When classes ended this May, Rattie's desire to shoot returned, and he's amassed a body of new work just in time for this year's auction.

"Joy" is titled for the emotion Rattie felt on seeing the finished piece for the first time. As a street photographer, the subjects of Rattie's photographs are found objects and never set up in advance, which explains why he refers to his images as fortuitous moments between shape and happenstance. It's undeniable that everything is something, but in his work, the something is of no consequence. The substance of the image is the emotion evoked within you, the viewer.
