Item Description
Margaret Marshall Saunders Beautiful Joe tells the TRUE story of a cruelly abused mutt and his rescue by a humane family. The Canadian author entered and won a literary competition sponsored by the American Humane Education Society in Boston looking for submissions of stories to teach children about the humane and kind treatment of animals. Originally published in 1894 was based on the true story of an abused dog in the author's home province of Ontario. The story of Joe fueled sentiments for the humane treatment of animals worldwide. It was the first Canadian novel to sell more than a million copies. By late 1930, Beautiful Joe had sold 7 million copies world-wide and became a best seller in America. It has been translated into over a dozen languages and even Braille, and was in the school curriculum at one time.
To passionate dog rescuers, this book belongs in your collection. Petite book measures 7 x 4 inches. 359 pages. No writing in it and binding is stable. Very good condition for a 127 year old book.
