37 Poems of Chairman Mao, 1964, Original Ink Rubbing, Calligraphy by Guo MoRuo. Limited printing.

A Chinese ink rubbing of the Thirty-seven poems by Chairman Mao; Ink rubbing on paper bound with thread, calligraphy by Guo Morua printed in 1964, celebrating the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. 11.02" x 6.25" x 0.79" (28cm x 16cm x 2cm).

The book is in very good condition considering ephemeral nature of this particular style of bookmaking.

Dog-eared front cover, archival tape repair to top center cover 0.625 clean tear. Some chips and minor staining to cover and bottom page edges otherwise very good copy of a limited and rare publication. Binding and thread are tight. Please see photos. Pre-Cultural Revolution.

Guo MoRuo, 1892-1978
Guo MoRuo born in Sichuan in 1892, was a famous politician, writer, poet and historian. He studied at Sixth colleges in the old system in the western Okayama prefecture of Japan from Autumn 1915 to Summer, 1918. Later he graduated from the department of Medicine, Kyushu Imperial University as its 16th graduate.

Guo was a romantic writer who eventually became Mao Zedong's last poetic interlocutor; a Marxist historian who evolved into the inaugural president of China's Academy of Sciences; and a leftist politician who devoted almost three decades to translating Goethe's Faust. His career, embedded in China's revolutionary century, has generated more controversy than admiration.

Guo MoRuo's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from 60 USD to 2,340,487 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 2005 the record price for this artist at auction is 2,340,487 USD for 28 Works: Lyrics by Mao Tse-Tung in Running Script, sold at China Guardian Auctions, Beijing in 2013. The artist died in 1978.
